The giant Provençal reed is one of the tallest herbaceous plants, reaching up to 2-10m in height. It grows rapidly and is very robust. Originating from the Mediterranean region and East Asia, it was introduced into many hot subtropical and temperate zones as an ornamental plant and cultivated to control erosion, provide shelter from the wind and for production of the stems which are used in the craft industry. Giant reed is also edible and has many traditional uses in the phytotherapy and pharmaceutical fields, for its soothing and healing effects and sudorific, diuretic and antiseptic properties.
