A small shrub that grows in dry and sunny conditions, Montpellier rockrose can be recognised by its evergreen leaves that contain an inflammable aromatic resin. This plant species is a pyrophyte, meaning it needs fire in order to produce new shoots, hence its nickname of “phoenix plant” in reference to the mythical bird that always rises from its ashes.
