Together, we can make a difference.

For each purchase of a Tonic Body Treatment Oil*,
Clarins will make a donation to the MIRIAD** research programme.
The project studies the influence that diet and the environment might have on inflammation linked to rheumatic disease.

*This oil is a cosmetic product. It does not have any therapeutic effect nor is it a treatment for arthritis.
**MIcrobiome Research Initiative on spondyloArthritis and Disbyosis.

For more than 25 years, Clarins has been committed to supporting arthritis research.
Last year, in partnership with the Fondation Arthritis, Clarins launched an international search for research projects in order to identify and finance the one that best focused on how environmental factors might influence joint disease.

And the winner is… the MIRIAD project.

MIRIAD stands for Microbiome Research Initiative on Spondyloarthritis and Disbyosis.

The MIRIAD project will study the influence diet and the environment might have on inflammatory rheumatic diseases via intestinal flora.

In an attempt to answer these questions and to understand the influence that diet and the environment might have on inflammatory joint diseases, the MIRIAD project aims to:

1. Identify a diagnostic marker of these diseases.
2. Identify influential dietary habits.
3. Test a new therapeutic strategy that includes re-balancing intestinal flora for patients who have been diagnosed with rheumatoid polyarthritis or spondyloarthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation & Clarins: A very special bond.

Disheartened by the suffering his wife endured brought on by rheumatoid polyarthritis, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, the founder of the Clarins brand, established the Association for Polyarthritis Research in 1989. In 2006, the organisation became a non-profit.

In 2006, the organisation became a non-profit.
Today, the Arthritis Foundation is the only private fundraising initiative in the field of rheumatic diseases.

Its objectives: fund rheumatoid disease research and encourage the discovery of innovative therapies. The foundation also works to raise public awareness about arthritis, how to prevent certain diseases as well as improving the quality of life of those affected by the disease.

Its resources: the scientific board brings together renowned European researchers and rheumatologists and will distribute more than 1 million euros in 2016 in the field of research.

“It’s a disease that’s as old as the world… but over the past 40 years, these degenerative auto-immune diseases are better diagnosed.”

Dr. Olivier Courtin-Clarins

“It looks like an ordinary disease yet it is an unbearable reality. Painful, swollen joints, relentless fatigue, and a myriad of questions: Why? Why me? Why don’t the doctors know how to help me? Appointments at the doctor’s office, at the hospital, doubts about the pain… solutions that aren’t really solutions: pain killers, muscle relaxers, rest… it’s a disability that just gets worse and may even lead to a loss of complete autonomy. It’s a disease that’s as old as the world… But, over the past 40 years, these degenerative auto-immune diseases are better diagnosed. Some appear in childhood, some during the teen years and others in adulthood. They develop over the course of years and get worse, eroding joints and eroding one’s ability to find relief, well-being and peace with one’s body.”

  • Primary cause of disability after age 40
  • Can lead to a serious disability
  • Causes great suffering

TRUE or FALSE

What do you know?

Arthritis primarily affects older people.

FalseMore often than not, rheumatic diseases are associated with older people. But, arthritis can also affect children, teens and moreover, young adults. In France, rheumatoid polyarthritis begins around age 40 and 5000 children suffer from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis is a genetic disease.

False Genetics is not always to blame when it omes to rheumatic disease. Why is it, for example, that only 5% of those who carry the HLA-B27 gene will develop spondylarthritis even though the gene is found in 90% of those with the disease? Rheumatic diseases actually involve many factors, including environmental ones like smoking and pollution.

Rheumatic disease is a primary cause of disabilities and professional leaves of absence.

True These diseases bring on great suffering, irreversible deformations and, over time, greater disabilities and a certain social isolation.
In France, it is the leading reason behind leaves of absence from work (with an average absence of 2 months) and 20% of the people diagnosed with the disease eventually have to stop working altogether.

The Arthritis Foundation has always been supported by Clarins.

TrueDisheartened by the suffering his wife endured brought on by rheumatoid polyarthritis, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, the founder of the Clarins brand, established the Association for Polyarthritis Research in 1989. In 2006, the Courtin-Clarins family donated 4 million euros to transform the original organisation into a non-profit. Clarins assumes all overhead costs for the Foundation and, as a result, 100% of the donations received goes to research.

The Arthritis Foundation works in collaboration with other Foundations like it worldwide.

TrueWorking with other foundations like it around the world makes it possible to share research opportunities and to finance a strategic vision. The Arthritis Foundation in France works with other foundations just like it in other countries, especially with Arthritis Research UK, Rheumafonds Netherlands, Arthritis Foundation US, Arthritis Society Canada and Arthritis Australia. The CEO of Arthritis Research UK has been on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation France since 2015.
