Everything nature has to offer

Clarins research is inspired by nature. 80% of the active ingredients used in our formulas come from a herbarium of over 200 plants.

These plants are our greatest asset: we are constantly seeking to improve the quality and traceability of our supply chains.

We have defined three requirement criteria that any new species joining our catalog must meet, with a particular attention to agricultural practices.

Each year, we give more priority to the supply chains that best respect the planet, plants and people.

Natural derivatives

Traceability and green chemistry

Naturally-derived ingredients are substances of natural origin (vegetable or mineral), which have undergone modifications to provide beneficial properties for the skin. This includes, for example, certain active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, excipients or agro-sourced solvents.

For these ingredients, we prefer materials that are easily biodegradable and whose manufacturing processes respect the principles of green chemistry. We also ensure they can be traced back to the country. Finally, for each of these supply chains, we set up programs to protect biodiversity or social projects in partnership with our suppliers.

Synthetic ingredients

The bare necessities

At Clarins, more than 81% of the active ingredients used are of natural origin. The remaining 19% is made up of synthetic ingredients.

We only use them when they are essential to guarantee the safety, effectiveness or sensoriality of our formulas, while constantly looking for natural alternatives. These synthetic ingredients must meet strict criteria regarding their safety for your skin, but also for nature. We ensure that they are biodegradable.
